I’m a curious bird and always asking questions. As 2016 draws to a close, take a moment to reflect on the year. Was the year everything you had hoped it would be?
For some of you the answer is absolutely and for others, it may be no, not so much and for most of you, it’s probably a combination of these two answers. Let’s talk about the areas in your life that fall into the not so much category.
What is the number 1 area in your life you would like to have a different result in? Many times this has been the same answer year after year, whether it is to find a new job, launch a business, and make more money, or reach your ideal weight.
Why is it that people get stuck? We know we want a different result yet we keep running the same play over and over again hoping for a new result. Yes, Einstein defines that as insanity!
We grew up taking in and absorbing oodles of information through our five senses. This information planted beliefs in our subconscious mind from the day we were born, which in many cases these beliefs are still calling the plays in our life at 30, 40 or 50 years old.
Don’t get me wrong, many of these beliefs are helpful, however, my guess is there are a few holding you back from creating the life you most desire. Facing these beliefs may feel very scary and the thought of changing them becomes paralyzing, creating the place of being stuck.
I would like to share with you a brief story about one of my clients that I will call Joe. For years, Joe has been absolutely miserable doing what he does for work, yet he gets paid very well to do it. He grew up hearing the people he loved and looked up to make references such as, “Wow, he has a good job with benefits and security, and no one ever walks away from that!”
As Joe grew up, he continued to see his parents and relatives go to work every day doing work they felt no connection to. The work didn’t appear to utilize any of their natural gifts and talents. This became the norm for what Joe expected his work life to be.
Now every time Joe gets a twinge to change his career, to do something he would love, the recording begins to play and continues to replay the words with his name in it “Wow, Joe has a good job with benefits and security, and no one ever walks away from that!” It plays over and over again which results in shutting down his idea and he boards the train to go to the same job he’s been going to for years.
The good news is as adults we get to keep the beliefs that serve us well and create new ones to help move us out of the crater we are stuck in. Joe has been able to create a new belief about work and he now does work that he is highly engaged in and excited about. It provides him the opportunity to stretch and grow his talents in a way he didn’t think possible.
When I work with people to help them shift their beliefs, it can be really helpful to understand more about the traits each of us possess as a human being. My friends Erin and Tom over at Currency Camp have developed a fascinating tool to help with the discovery process. I’m excited to announce that I will begin using this with my clients in 2017. Stay tuned for more on this exciting news!
In the meantime, take a moment to identify an area where you are feeling stuck in your life. Now get curious with yourself about what underlying belief have you acquired that may be contributing to keeping you from moving forward?
Once you have identified the belief, what would be another way you could choose to believe that would serve you better and allow you to move forward? Let's go back to Joe, he now believes it is beneficial to make a job change to a role that is more aligned with who he is as a person and what is important to him. He no longer believes what he grew up hearing. Funny thing about Joe, he makes more money now than he did in the role he was miserable in!
